The BC CEAS board of directors sets priority areas for the Elder Law Clinic based on community feedback. These service areas change from time to time. At present they are:
- Financial abuse, such as:
- fraud or scam,
- misuse of power of attorney,
- forgery, or
- theft.
Where physical or sexual abuse has occurred and a legal remedy may end the abuse or prevent further abuse, such as obtaining a restraining order in a family situation where abuse has occurred.
Where benefits or pensions have been denied and there are grounds for an appeal. For example:
- Denial of OAS, or denial of other pension benefits.
Experiencing mistreatment in long term care, or in another institutional facility. For example:
- Physical abuse,
- Medical treatment without consent,
- Refusal to allow visitors, or
- Moving a capable older adult into care against his or her wishes.
Age discrimination in housing or other human rights issues.
Disputes in assisted living settings, such as:
- Breach of contract,
- Pressure to move out without proper grounds, and
- An unsafe situation or a quality of care issue.
